The photograph shows the first crop of (oaten) hay being taken from Sidney Gordon Smith’s farm (now part of Barragunda) at Dueran East via Barwite. Sidney Gordon Smith is the father of Esther W. Langley (nee Smith). Sidney Gordon Smith died from pneumonia, 1906, aged 35 years. Note: the reaper and binder and the bowyangs on father. Bowyang (Aust/NZ) is a band or strap worn round the trouser leg below the knee. ORIGIN: late 19th century: from the British dialect bowyanks, bowyankees ‘leather leggings’, of unknown origin.
