Mary Kennedy’s house
Item Number: 2594
Mary Kennedy’s house – Main Street – Mansfield. Left to right: Robert James Conlan (Great grandson of Sgt Michael Kennedy) – Michael Benedict Conlan (grandson of Sgt Kennedy, son of Kate Kennedy) – John Conlan (great-grandson of Sgt Kennedy) – Anne Conlan (nee Wardley, wife of Michael Conlan) – Jill Conlan (great grand-daughter of Sgt Kennedy). Mary Kennedy, Kate Kennedy (Conlan), Rose Kennedy (Williams) were daughters of Sgt Michael Kennedy. Mounted Constable Michael Kennedy (later to become Sergeant) bought two blocks of land and a brick house with an adjoining brick shop at this address in 1872. However he didn’t reside here until 1877 – 78. Sergeant Kennedy together with his wife, Bridget, and family lived here at the time of his death at the hands of Ned Kelly in October 1878. Bridget left Mansfield in 1917. The dwelling house remained the home of Mr and Mrs Harry Williams until their death and Michael and Bridget’s daughter, Mary Kennedy lived there until her death in 1953. Rooms were then rented before the building was demolished in 1958. The Mansfield Courier, Friday, August 8, 1958. Old Mansfield Landscape Disappears. It is with a certain amount of sorrow that we see the demolition of the late Miss Kennedy’s home. This was the home of the late Sergeant Kennedy, who was shot by the Kelly gang in the 80’s. He was a very brave man and left a wife and a large young family, which made it all the more tragic. His wife continued to live there and reared the family. Two of her daughters, the late Mrs Williams and the late Miss Kennedy lived on there until their demise a few years ago. The family had occupied the house for about 89 years. Time marches on and we all realise that the old gives way to the new.
