Bill Rickard (left) and his brother Tom, about 1916, at their hut on the Woods Point Road near Moffatt’s. From a print held by Howard Combes. Bill Rickard was a shift boss at the A1 during the war years. Bill had been badly injured at the All Nations mine in 1908, when a falling drill steel speared him through from the back of the shoulder to the chest. He survived the wound, but it left him with a stoop and a large lump on his back. He remained at the A1 until the twenties, and died at Woods Point in 1930 of miner’s complaint.
